Building a Town
The builders of Celebration were presented with the challenge of designing a whole town from the ground up.
More than just houses and apartments, they had to build a community. And in order to do so, they employed some of the best architects and designers America and the world has to offer. Celebration's post office was designed by Michael Graves, famous for the Swan and Dolphin hotels at Walt Disney World. The emminent Philip Johnson, famous for the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center and the AT&T Corporate Headquarters in New York, designed the Celebration Town Hall. The Celebration Hotel was designed by Graham Gund and its construction is being overseen by the firm of Lindsay, Pope, Brayfield & Associates. The interiors of the Disney Cruise Line offices at Celebration Place were designed by Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates Architects and Interior Designers. SunTrust Bank operates the Celebration bank, designed by Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates Inc., and AMC operates the AMC Celebration 2 state-of-the-art theaters with stadium seating, designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates.
Celebration Health
|
Celebration Health, a brand new hospital facility designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects and operated by the Florida Hospital, provides health services, a fitness centre and preventative medicine. Celebration Health just recently opened its own emergency room. Police and EMS and services are provided by Osceola County, although Celebration does have its own fire station. The Celebration School is a progressive and innovative K-12 school.
Besides the well known names of AMC, SunTrust Bank and Florida Hospital, you'll be hard pressed to find other world famous brands in the Town of Celebration. There is no Burger King or McDonald's. Instead, you're invited to visit Barnie's Coffee & Tea, Café D'Antonio, Columbia Restaurant, Max's Café & Coffee Shop, Max's Grille, or Wm. J. Sweet's.
Likewise, you won't find a Wal-Mart, Target, or Sear's in Celebration. Instead, your shopping habits can be satiated at Chambers Jewelers, Downeast - An Orvis Shop, Gooding's, L'Occitane, Market Street Gallery, M Fashions, Soft As A Grape, Thomas Dunn Interiors, Village Merchantile, White's Books & Gifts, Wood, Stone & Steel, or Wyland Galleries. Celebration also offers a farmers market on Saturdays and a golf course.
The Celebration Health website offers some great surround videos of not only the Celebration Health facility, but the Town of Celebration as well.
Government
To put it simply and bluntly, there is no elected government in the Town of Celebration. Despite it's name, the Town of Celebration is not a town at all. it's simply a vast tract of privately owned land known as the Celebration Community Development District. Commercial properties are owned by the Celebration Company while residential properties are owned by the home owners who form the Celebration Residential Owner's Association. Residents pay fees to this owner's association, which are then used to maintain the town and parks, including the town's jewel, Lakeside Park. Through an arrangement with Osceola County, these fees are charged as part of a resident's annual tax bill to the county.
The town's government, such as it is, consists of a council with both members of the owner's association and the Celebration Company. The council is designed in such a fashion that the Celebration Company has final say on any and all decisions.
